CELPIP TEST
Types of CELPIP Tests and Who Should Take Them
Candidates can choose between two types of CELPIP exams, depending on their immigration or citizenship requirements:
🔹 CELPIP – General Test
The CELPIP-General test is designed for individuals applying for Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) and work permits. This test evaluates all four English language skills—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking—and is available at test centres globally, including in India.
🔹 CELPIP – General LS Test
The CELPIP-General LS assesses only Listening and Speaking skills and is specifically meant for individuals applying for Canadian citizenship. This version of the test is only available within Canada.
CELPIP-General
The general test is a computer-based test covering all four modules (LRWS). All the sections can be taken in a single day, unlike IELTS. The test taker has 3 hours to complete the test.
Who Should Take the CELPIP-General Test?
The CELPIP-General is recognized by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for a variety of immigration programs, including:
-
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
-
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
-
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
-
Start-up Visa Program
-
Various Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)
-
Canadian Employment or Work Permit Applications
If you’re applying under any of these immigration pathways, the CELPIP-General test can serve as your official proof of English language proficiency.
CELPIP vs IELTS: IRCC-Approved Language Tests
IRCC currently approves two English language proficiency tests for immigration to Canada:
-
CELPIP-General
-
IELTS General Training
Both are equally accepted for PR and work-related immigration programs, but CELPIP is entirely computer-based, making it a preferred option for many tech-savvy test takers.
Format of CELPIP General
CELPIP Test Format – Module-Wise Breakdown
The CELPIP test is designed to assess a candidate’s proficiency in English across all four essential communication skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The entire test is conducted in a single sitting of approximately 3 hours, with no scheduled breaks. Each module is structured into specific parts and timed sections to evaluate real-world language usage.
🔹 Test Order and Module Structure
-
Listening (6 Parts)
The Listening section consists of six parts that assess your ability to understand everyday conversations and discussions in various contexts. -
Reading (4 Parts)
The Reading module includes four parts, evaluating your reading comprehension skills through different text formats like emails, articles, and informational content. -
Writing (2 Tasks)
The Writing section contains two tasks: writing an email and responding to a survey question. It focuses on your ability to express ideas clearly and appropriately in written English. -
Speaking (8 Tasks)
The Speaking test comprises eight tasks, covering personal experiences, opinions, problem-solving, and daily communication.
Time Management and Scoring Insights
Each part of the CELPIP test comes with a defined time limit, requiring candidates to manage their time effectively. The Listening and Reading sections are computer-rated, and may include a few unscored questions used for research and development purposes. These trial questions are randomly placed and do not impact your overall score.
CELPIP uses a fair and adaptive scoring system, where scores move up or down based on the complexity of questions answered correctly—ensuring a balanced and accurate evaluation of language skills.
