Types of Higher Education Institutions

There are 500 officially recognized institutions of higher education in 165 towns and cities throughout Germany.

Universities in Germany are categorized into three groups :

  • Technical University/ Technische Universität (TU) 
    1. Degrees offered includes Bachelors, Masters & Doctorate.
    2. Universities mainly impart theoretical knowledge
    3. Research plays an integral part of the study.
  • Universities of Applied Sciences/ Fachhochschule
    1. More practical oriented.
    2. Offers Bachelors programs in general.
    3. Some institutions also offer Masters Program.
    4. Though research is gaining importance but the focus remains at application oriented study.
    5. Excellent job opportunities owing to close tie up with industry.
  • Colleges of Art, Film and Music
    1. Artistic subjects, such as music, architecture, visual arts, drama, dance, industrial and fashion design
    2. Modern media, directors, cinematographers, screenwriters and other film and television professionals are trained
    3. Admission requirements for these courses include a specific talent which you must demonstrate at an entrance examination. 

Application Deadlines for German Universities for 2023

The intakes in Germany offered by the academic institutions are majorly 2 types:

Two Intakes:

Ø Winter  – September / October

Ø Summer –  March / April

Deadlines for Applications:

Ø Winter – Starts from 15th December to 31st March

Ø Summer – Starts from 15th August to 15th January

Entry Requirements for Masters in Germany

  • Academic percentage – Above 60% is required      
  • Minimum IELTS score – Overall 6.5 with no band less than 6 or Minimum TOEFL score of 87.
  • German Language – may not always be a criterion for admission but it is better to achieve a basic level of German language A1 or A2 as more and more universities are expecting at least A1 level proficiency. It is noted that candidates with German language skills have a better chance of getting admission to German universities as compared to candidates with no German language skills.

Three ways to prove the language ability is through: 

  • DSH – German Language test for foreign students.
  • TestDaF – a central, standardized test for German as a foreign language.
  • ZOP of the Goethe Institute.
  • GRE is needed for good and high-ranked Universities – 310+ is considered a good score. GRE is a mandatory requirement for some Automobile and Mechanical courses by high-ranked Universities.
  • There is no concept of applying without IELTS or final year mark sheets in most universities. It is recommended to apply once the student is ready with all the documents including the IELTS score card and Provisional Degree Certificate.
  • Universities do not issue Conditional Offer Letters to the students.
  • For courses like Mechanical Engineering and Automotive Engineering, candidate must have very good academics like 75% plus in Bachelors and a GRE score as well, as these are highly competitive courses.

Entry requirements for Bachelor’s

  • 12 years of education is required for entry into a bachelor’s program in Germany. Some universities need 13 years of education. This can be achieved in either of the two ways: 
    1. Completing the first year of a bachelor’s program from a recognized university in India in the relevant subject field.
    2. Completing a Foundation year at a university in Germany to compensate for the 13th year of education.
  • Academic percentage – Minimum 60% & above in 12th
  • IELTS – Overall 6.5 with no band less than 6
  • German Language – B2 Level Proficiency 
Documents Required for German Student Visa:
  • Passport copy.
  • Mark Sheets of 10th and 12th  and Bachelors.
  • Degree Certificate.
  • Recommendation letter from HOD & Project Guide in sealed & attested covers.
  • Statement of Purpose.
  • TOEFL / IELTS score.
  • GRE scorecard (Not mandatory). Most of the Mechanical/Automobile Programs require a GRE.
  • Updated Resume.
  • Statement of Purpose
  • German Proficiency Certificate (if any).
  • Project Synopsis (If any).
  • Work Experience (If any)

Master’s:

  • Academic percentage: Min 60-65% in Bachelor’s is required
  • IELTS – Overall 6.5 with no band less than 6
  • Tuition Fees – € 9000 – € 15,000 approx.

Bachelor’s:

  • Academic percentage: 60 to 65% in 10th and 12th Std
  • IELTS – Overall 6.5 with no band less than 6
  • SAT score requirement in Constructor University is 1200
  • Fees – € 10,000 – € 15,000 approx.

German Visa Process for Students

Proof of financial sources: 

  • Student needs to pay minimum 1st-year complete tuition fees before submitting visa file to Embassy/VFS
  • Blocked account amount has been increased to €11,208

Mandatory APS Certificate & TestAS 

Germany Embassy has made APS Certificate a mandatory requirement to get the Germany Student Visa with effect from the 1st of Nov. 2022

The APS is a joint institution of the German Embassy’s cultural department and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The APS checks the authenticity of educational biographies and the corresponding educational certificates, and issues certificates if the result is positive. The fee for the APS is INR 18,000 (NON-REFUNDABLE) and APS will be applicable for both UG and PG Students.

Duolingo, PTE, and MOI are not acceptable to the embassy.

Recognized language tests are required during the visa application process: Please provide proof of your language ability in the language of instruction required for your desired study course or preparatory course in Germany. Without a preparatory language course, as a rule, at least a B2-level in the language of instruction is required. Please note that for the visa process, only language certificates that are approved by the German government will be accepted (such as Goethe Institute / Max Mueller Bhavan / ÖST, DSD, IELTS, and TOEFL). Steps in German Student Visa Process

1) Open an account in the German Banks – Fintiba, Ex-patrio, Deutsche bank, Coracle as soon as the student receives the offer letter

2) After opening the blocked account,  deposit 11,208 EUR + 150 EUR bank charges in the Bank

3) Take Appointment through email, call or online for Consulate/VFS VISA Interview

4) Fill out the VISA application form and arrange other documents as per VISA checklist

5) Attend the VISA Interview on Appointment Date

7) Visa Issuance

6) Submit passport at VFS/Consulate for VISA Stamping after receipt of Confirmation Email by Consulate

  • Valid passport (issued within the last 10 years and with at least 12 months validity left after the scheduled return)
  • Application form & declarations duly signed
  • 1 copy of your passport’s data page (A4 size copy)
  • 3 passport pictures according to biometric specifications
  • Cover letter from the applicant explaining the exact purpose and duration of stay
  • Letter of admission from a German university (electronic version)
  • Proof of payment of study fees, if applicable
  • Proof of language proficiency in English (only IELTS/TOEFL).

  • Travel health insurance covering the period from your departure to the date of enrolment at the university (Euro 30,000 coverage)

  • Proof of financial means to cover the costs for the time of your studies (Blocked Account for Living expenses and savings or FD or Education loan for balance complete tuition fees)

  • Proof of other academic qualifications, if applicable

There would be a brief interview of the student by an officer at the consulate to assess the genuineness of the student
  • Note: –  Applicants are requested to prepare 3 sets (1 set of original documents and 2 sets of photocopy documents) of the above-mentioned documents. Additional documents may have to be presented, if required.

Part Time work/Student Jobs

  • International students are allowed to work for 120 full working days or 240 half working days in a year.
  • Typically the student wages range from 8 to 12 Euros an hour. Students can work on campus or outside the campus.
  • Students with German language skills are entitled for higher wages as compared to the students having no skills.
