The Occupational English Test or OET is an English language proficiency test taken by healthcare practitioners and is recognised by various regulatory bodies in Healthcare industry. OET Test types
Test takers has the option of taking OET in three different modes.
- Paper based test at a Test Venue,
- Computer based test at a Test Venue
- Home based Computer test.

OET on Paper at a Test Venue
For over three decades, paper-based OET tests are being conducted all over the world, and has 4 fundamental components – Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening.
OET on Computer at a Test Venue
As the paper based test, Computer delivered test also have the same format of the test. It is proctored by the OET invigilators and evaluated by the expert SME’s.
OET at Home
With the exact time and format along with difficulty levels, the test taker can take this test at the comfort of their home environment. A good internet connection with the prescribed specification of the desktop or laptop is all needed.

OET Score:
OET has the scores from 0 to 500 with a grade to certain score ranges. Each grade denotes the level of proficiency a test taker possesses. It will be 10-point increment based on the test takers performance. A is the highest grade and E being the least grade.

A | Score ranging from 400 – 500 | shows that the test taker can communicate in a fluent and effective way with patients and healthcareexperts by using appropriate register, tone and lexis. Shows complete understanding of any kind of written or spoken language in a medical context. |
B | Score ranging from 350 – 440 | shows that the test taker can communicate effectively with patients and health professionals, using correct tone and vocabulary, with only occasional inaccuracies with some hesitations. Infers great understanding in a range of healthcare clinical contexts. |
C+, C | Score ranging from 300 – 340 and 200 – 290 | shows that the test taker can maintain the interaction in a relevant healthcare environment inspite of occasional errors and shortfalls and follow a standardised spoken language normally seen in their field of expertise. |
D | Score ranging from 100-190 | shows that the test taker can maintain some interaction and understand straightforward factual information in his/her field of specialisation but may ask for clarification. Frequency in errors, inaccuracies and wrongly or overly used technical language can cause stress while communicating. |
E | Score ranging from 0-90 | shows that the test taker can manage simple interaction on familiar topics and understand the main point in short, simple messages, provided he/she can ask for clarification.High amount of errors and wrongly or overly used technical language that might cause considerable stress and breakdowns in conversation. |

- OET can be conducted on multiple dates i.e. 14 times in a calendar year.
- It can be taken at test venues anywhere in the world.
- The registration fees for OET is AU$587.
- Results are released online within 16 business days after the test. Official statements of results are sent out through post following the release of online results.
- Unlike IELTS, there is no overall grade. The candidates receive separate grades for each modules.
- B-Grade is best recommended since most recognising organisations set this as eligibility criteria.
- OET results are valid for up to two years..
