Extended Post Study work rights in Australia - 2022 Update
2022 has been the year of hopefulness and positive expectations. Immigrants and international students who have waited for almost 2 years to move to their favourite destinations have already started their journey as we speak now.
Now, Australia has given on more positive reason why you have to move to Australia for education. International students in Australia with in-demand skills will soon be able to stay and work in the country for longer, under changes announced earlier this September. .
Post-study work rights for graduates with degrees that teach sought-after skills will be increased by two years in an attempt to meet Australia’s labour shortages, which means that graduates with select bachelor’s degrees will be able to stay in Australia for four years, students with MS degrees are eligible for five years, and those with PhDs for six years.
The MOE is yet to announced which degree programs will be permitted for extended visas, meanwhile the Government is currently struggling to fill vacancies in sectors such as nursing, engineering and technology.
“Important announcement from the floor of the Jobs and Skills Summit – we will increase by two years post study work rights for international students who graduate from Australian universities in areas of verified skills shortage.” – Jason Clare MP, Minister for Education
Australia’s international education sector has welcomed this move, with stakeholders expecting the measures to both help boost the workforce and increase the country’s appeal to prospective international students.
The government also announced that the number of hours that international students can work will be capped once again in June 2023, reversing the relaxation of restrictions in January, although a decision has not yet been made on what the cap will be.
The government said that it hopes to strike “the right balance between work and study”. It also announced an additional AUS$36.1 million investment in visa processing, following delays that have hampered the international education sector’s recovery since borders reopened earlier this year.
Sarah Todd, global vice president at Griffith University, told The PIE ” A key part of this has to be providing our international students with policy frameworks that provide confidence that many more of them will be supported to live, learn and stay in Australia” and that the university was “delighted” by this recognition of “the important role that international graduates do and can play in a number of sectors across the Australian economy.”
So, what’s holding you back. Pack up your stuff and build your career in Australia.
