Test Variants of the GRE

GRE comes in two variants:

  • General GRE test – taken for any graduate school/business schools/law school programs.
  • GRE Subject test – taken to express the expertise in a particular subject mostly for post-doctoral programs or research programs. The available subject tests are

Format of GRE Test

GRE Test Pattern for Computer-Delivered Test
Section 1: Analytical Writing:  1 section having 2 tasks. The duration given is 60 mins.
Section 2: Verbal Reasoning: 2 sections having 40 questions. The duration given is 60 mins.

Section 3: Quantitative Reasoning: 2 sections having 40 questions. The duration given is 70 mins.

The Un-scored or Research questions vary from section to section within the test.

GRE Test Pattern for Paper-Delivered Test

Section 1: Analytical Writing:  2 sections having 2 tasks. The duration given is 60 mins.

Section 2: Verbal Reasoning: 2 sections having 50 questions. The duration given is 70 mins.

Section 3: Quantitative Reasoning: 2 sections having 50 questions. The duration given is 80 mins.

In Paper Delivered tests, the Un-scored and Research questions will not be given. 

How GRE Test is Scored

GRE Scoring:

  • The total score on the GRE is 340 (Verbal – 170 and Quants – 170).  AWA will be scored separately on a pointer of a 6 scale.
  • The student can view the unofficial score at the end of the test.
  • Using this score, you can report to any 4 institutions of your choice or you can cancel the score.
  • The official score report will be delivered to the chosen institutes within 10-15 days from the test date.
  • You will receive an email, once the scores are reported. You can view your scores through your ETS account.
  • To get a paper copy of the Official Test taker score report, you can use the print option to get the report.

The total test time for the GRE General Test is around 3.45  hrs, with short breaks. 

The GRE General Test uses the foundations of high school math to test quantitative reasoning. The test material measures your ability to understand basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis; to reason quantitatively; and to solve problems in a quantitative setting.

The cost of taking the GRE exam is $228, although it may vary depending on the county. It is best to have a look at the Official GRE Website for accurate results. For rescheduling the test, you may need to pay a fee of $50 for rescheduling.

GRE is offered on all working days in India. The schedule can be obtained from Prometric in person, through phone, e-mail or online

GRE can be taken unlimited number of times with a gap of a minimum of 31 calendar days between 2 tests. However, one can give the test only 5 times in a calendar year and 8 time in a lifetime. It is highly advisable to appear for GRE limited times as it may affect the test taker’s credibility.

Universities will consider the  best score taken. Though, some universities may go for the average score of all the tests taken.  Check the respective universities guideline for more details. 

Your GRE score report is valid for 5 years from the test date. 

Scores to four colleges can be sent free of cost while taking the exam at the end of the session. You will be asked the universities’ names where you wish to report. Subsequently, for each additional score report sent to a college, you would have to pay $30.

Anything above 300 is considered good, but you should always higher score. An engineering student should score above 160 in quant as this counts a lot. For others, 150 and above in each section is recommended. The best way to set the score target is to research it on the universities’ websites for their eligibility criteria. 

The GRE has three sections – a Verbal Section, a Quantitative Section and an Analytical Writing Assessment. The Quantitative and Verbal Sections are each out of 170 points making the highest possible score of 340 on the GRE. The Analytical Writing Section is scored on an independent scale where a student gets a score from 0 to 6, with 6 being the highest. The Analytical Writing Score does not affect the overall score out of 340 points. The best time to prepare for GRE is at least a year before your intended Intake. This will give your enough comfortable time to prepare and score as desired.
