The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) assesses the writing, quantitative, analytical, verbal, and reading skills in written English. The test is designed to measure the ability of the candidate to reason all these skills. The test is designed to judge the critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving skills of the candidates apart from monitoring the ability to solve complex judgments. The aspirant should know the basic Maths and English-language to solve these queries.

The GMAT is scored between 200 and 800, with 540 being close to the average score. In recent years, there have been more test takers yielding higher scores however. Breaking 650 could get you into many schools, but some top schools require above a 680.

Moreover, if the candidate has not finished the exam in the allotted time then, his/her score is calculated based on the number of questions answered. The score of the candidate will impact significantly if the candidate has not attempted the answers.

Apart from this, the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) Score is based on the assessment of the Argument essay and it ranges from 0 to 6 in half-point intervals. Also, the Integrated Reasoning Score range from 1 to 8.

The candidate must carry a valid passport with a recent photograph and appointment confirmation letter which you got while registering for the exam.

In total, the GMAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete (including breaks). The analytical writing assessment is 30 minutes long, and the integrated reasoning section is 30 minutes. The quantitative section takes 62 minutes, and the verbal section takes 65 minutes.

A computer adaptive test adjusts to your skill level in real time as you take the GMAT. A computer algorithm will determine the difficulty level of the questions you will receive, and your score, based on your answers.

You will begin the exam with questions of medium difficulty. If you complete “medium” questions correctly, you will receive more difficult questions. If you complete ‘medium’ questions incorrectly, you will receive easier questions. Your score will be determined not only by how many questions you answer correctly or incorrectly, but by how many questions of each difficulty level you answer correctly.

GMAT Scores are valid for 5 years. Some applicants take the test right after the undergrad (while the memory of math is still very fresh) and then apply after several years of work experience.

More than 1,900 MBA programs use GMAT as a part of the application process. See the full listing here

The GMAT score range is between 200 and 800. Very few people get 200 or 800, the majority, however falls between 400 and 600. The average score is about 550. You can see the score distribution in the Gmat Score Interpretation Guide – also check out Everything You Need to Know about GMAT Scores and GMAT Score Reports

While the GMAT is used solely as an entrance exam for MBA programs, the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is accepted on many differing masters programs. Because of this, not as many business schools accept the GRE compared to the GMAT.

However, some MBA applicants will have previously taken the GRE in their educational career, and so may not wish to take another exam. Also, some applicants may not have decided between taking an MBA or a masters degree, and therefore wish to keep their options open.
You should always check with the business schools that you wish to apply to before committing to take either test. However, you can always consult with our Admission Advisor in this regard.

In order to take the test, you will first have to have registered through the GMAT site. You will then need to bring the letter, or a printed copy of the email that you received from Pearson VUE (who run the test on GMAC’s behalf) with you to your test.

To prove you are who you say you are, you will also need to take appropriate identification. For some countries this has to be your passport, but in others you can choose to bring other government approved identification. You will be told prior to the exam which identification is accepted at your GMAT test center. As of now, in India, it is passport which is the only valid id proof to provide.

While it is not essential, you can also bring the details of five business schools who you would like to receive your official score report. It is advisable to select your schools before the test, as afterwards you will be charged for each GMAT score report you wish to send.

In GMAT, Writing ability, knowledge of Basic Math (Arithmetic, Algebra, Word Problems, Geometry) and just a bit of intermediate Math (Statistics, Probability, Combinations/Permutations), and knowledge of grammar principles, logical reasoning, reading, and analytical skills are being tested in the test taker.

Your unofficial GMAT score (preliminary score) will be made available to you immediately after you finish the test. You can also cancel your test score immediately after taking it, but in that case, your score will not be displayed. This option is not recommended unless you feel that you bombed the test and did not finish a number of questions.

Your official test scores will be sent to you either by mail or via email (to be accessed on http://www.mba.com). That’s when you will find out your Analytical Writing Assessment score.

A good score on the GMAT is a score that will get you into your first choice for business school. This varies with the schools you are applying to, what type of program you are trying to join (full time, part time, or executive education), your work experience, and your undergraduate GPA.
