PTE – Academic

The PTE Academic Test (Pearson Test of English) is a computer-delivered academic English language test aimed at assessing non-native English speakers aspiring to study in a native English-speaking country. It assesses the skills of reading, writing, listening, and Speaking in a unique way such as 2 skills are tested together such as reading + speaking or reading + listening.  

 It is owned and administered by PLC Group, which is responsible for conducting the tests. There are two types of PTE tests: PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI, which are similar in content with some differences in the registration process. The test taker must be at least 16 years of age while taking this test.

This test score is accepted by thousands of Universities /colleges around the world. Also, it is accepted for visa processing in many countries.

Test duration 

The whole test is done in a single session for about 120 minutes and is taken sitting at a computer in a secure test environment. The test taker has to take the speaking part at the computer. Your voice will be recorded and sent for evaluation and scoring.

One advantage of this test is that the results are obtained in about 48 hours.

The registration fee for both Online and Test Centre PTE Academic test is Rs 15900/-.

Cancel or Reschedule PTE

The test taker can Cancelling or rescheduling the PTE Academic exam through PTE website

Cancellation Fees

Candidates who decide on not pursuing their PTE Academic test after booking their exam online can claim refund by meeting these guidelines:

  • Full refund if cancelled before 14 calendar days before their test date
  • 50% refund if Cancelled with less than 14 calendar days, but at least 7 calendar days before their test date
  • However, if the candidate is cancelling the exam in less than 7 calendar days before the exam, no refund can be made.
Rescheduling Fees
  • 50 % of the test fees will be refunded if rescheduled the test with less than 14 calendar days, but at least 7 full calendar days before their test date.
  • No refunds will be provided on rescheduling the exam less than 7 calendar days before the exam.

*Note that the reschedule policy does not include the booked test date.

FAQs on PTE

First, the similarities: both IELTS and PTE have the four sections of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Nevertheless, some content patterns vary in both the tests.

For instance, in the IELTS Speaking Test, the speaking abilities of a candidate is evaluated through live conversations, and is recorded in some recording device

But in the PTE Speaking Test, a candidate speaks into a microphone and the speech gets recorded in a computerized system. The speaking is then evaluated and rated by a computer.

Again, the scoring pattern in IELTS is a manual exercise, and a candidate is rated on a band of 0-9, while PTE—which is a fully computerized test—grades test takers on a band of 10-90.

Another difference between the tests is the duration during which results are declared. While the PTE Academic scores are accessible online within five business days, the IELTS Test Report Form is made available within 13 calendar days from the date of the test.

Yes, a candidate can take the PTE Academic as many times as she/he desires for. Just that, one can book the next test only after receiving the scores.

 

The overall score is based on the student’s performance on all test items. For each item, the score you obtain contributes to the overall score. The overall score range is 10-90 points. You can register for the PTE Academic test online. If you are a first time test taker, you will have to create a web account to schedule the test. If you are a returning test taker, you can use your existing web account to register for another test.

In India, the PTE Academic test costs Rs.15900/- for test registration. All PTE Academic test takers can send their test reports to any number of institutions for free.

You may reschedule your test to a different date, time or location. To do this you will have to access your web account. Before rescheduling the test appointment, please check Payment and Fees section in the PTE Academic Hand Book (You may download the hand book at ).

The test is conducted at Pearson Testing Centers. In India, the test centers are in Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, and New Delhi.

You may send your scores to universities by accessing your web account. You may send your scores to as many institutions as you wish for free. Your scores will be available to the universities you selected within 48 hours of reporting.

PTE Academic test scores are valid for 2 years.

You can take the PTE Academic test any number of times as you wish. However, you can schedule another test 5 days after your last test appointment.

PTE is widely accepted by most countries and by thousands of  universities. Here is a list of universities that accept PTE Academic scores.

PTE grades are calculated on a scale of 10 to 90. All tests are graded by an automated scoring system trained to mimic how humans mark would score based on many responses. Correct answers are given 1 point, partial answers between 0 and 1 point, and incorrect answers 0 points.
